Permanent Account Number or commonly known as PAN is a code that acts as an identification for individuals, families and corporate, especially those who pay Income Tax in India. This is a unique 10 digit number. The number is allotted by income tax department under the supervision of Central Board of Direct Taxes. PAN card is also used as an identity proof at various government and private places. The number does not change even if you change your postal address throughout India.
Government of India has introduced two easy ways to apply for a PAN card: offline and online. You can go to your nearest PAN card office and apply for a PAN card personally over there. Or you can apply it online without visiting any office personally.
Know how to apply for a PAN card online.
Step 1: Get all your documents scanned
As you will be applying online, before you proceed with the procedure, get your documents lined up. Scan your documents, signature and photos. Scanning them before starting the procedure will save a lot of your time in the application procedure.
List of required documents for online PAN card application:
- ID proof: Voter ID, passport, Aadhar card, driving license, government issued ID card for government employee, etc.
- Address proof: Electricity bill, telephone bill, Aadhar card, passport, driving license, bank passbook, voter ID, property documents, ration card etc.
Step 2: Login to one portal
You can apply for a PAN card online via two portals:

Step 3: Fill up the form online
As you will click on any of the above given links, you will directed to fill up a form. You will have to mention your KYC details explicitly on the form. It will take you nearly 5 to 10 minutes to fill up the whole form. Check every detail when you fill up the form neatly.
Step 4: Upload the documents
Once you fill up the form, you will get an option to upload the documents. Here without wasting any time, you can upload the already scanned documents. The instructions about how to upload the documents can be seen on the ‘upload documents’ window on the form.
Step 5: Pay the application fees
After uploading the appropriate documents, before hitting the submit button, you will have to pay the application fees for PAN card. You can pay this fees via debit card, credit card, net banking or by your mobile wallet. You will have to pay a minimum of Rs. 110 if your mailing address is in India. But if your communication address is outside India, you will have to pay Rs. 1020.
Step 6: Track your status
After paying the fees and submitting your application, it will take approximately 18 to 25 working days to receive your PAN card. The card will be sent by post on your postal address mentioned in the form. Meanwhile, you can check your PAN card application status on the link below:
